High Point premarket set for Sept. 13-14

Spring edition runs March 15-16

HIGH POINT — Sponsors of High Point’s premarket have set the fall event’s dates for Sept. 13-14. As previously announced, the spring edition will run March 15-16.

Held about a month before each High Point Market, premarket aims to give retailers a chance to preview major product collections, secure distribution, and strengthen relationships with key vendors and company principals, according to market officials.

Twenty-four High Point Market exhibitors and three of the city’s showroom building operators are sponsors of premarket this year. They met last week to set the dates and the premarket agenda.

As it did this fall, the September 2010 premarket will coincide with the opening two days of the Las Vegas Market, which is set for Sept. 13-16. The March premarket will occur about six weeks after the winter Vegas market, which runs Feb. 1-5.

Kevin O’Connor, CEO of Samson Marketing, parent company of premarket sponsors Legacy Classic and Universal Furniture, said the High Point event “affords manufacturers and retailers quality time to really connect. It’s a relaxed environment that encourages interaction between top-level executives that is quite unlike the frenetic, time-pressed interchanges of market.”

Brian Casey, CEO of the High Point Market Authority, added: “The emphasis on the ability to review ‘market-ready’ product in advance of market one month later is one of the critical elements making the premarket events so successful.”

Quest for Quality

Three-fourths of home furnishings shoppers are looking for quality product. That’s one of the key findings from the more than 8,500 U.S. consumers responding to Furniture/Today and HGTV’s exclusive survey, The 2010 Consumer.Here’s what several home furnishings shoppers have to say about quality.

“I’m looking for better quality products that will last longer for the price rather than cheaply-made items.” 41-year-old from Ohio

“We’re buying quality things to last and changing the smaller items to give an updated look.” 61-year-old from Utah

“I’m looking for items that are very well made.” 30-year-old from Washington

“I try to be a little more rational on pieces that what will last longer while remaining stylish and functional.” 24-year-old from Maryland

“We’re buying furniture that will last a long time – product that’s not too trendy to become outdated quickly.” 33-year-old from Georgia

“The economy has made me even more apt to buy quality rather than quantity.” 56-year-old from Colorado

“Our furniture needs to last because we consider it an investment.” 40-year-old from Texas

“I look for more value and quality – a piece that will last over the years yet look great.” 43-year-old from Illinois

“I save the money before purchasing and I only buy good quality that will last.” 50-year-old from Texas

“I am saving to buy one piece of furniture at a time. Now it’s about value and quality.” 38-year-old from Alabama

“Now I think about quality and whether the furniture I purchase will stand the test of time.” 44-year-old from Missouri

‘Tis the season to be optimistic

The holiday season is upon us and a new survey from American Express  reveals that 53% of consumers have intentions on spending more or the same on holiday gifts this year compared to a year ago. This is welcome news for economy and retailers.

According to Deloitte’s 24th Annual Holiday Survey, 54% of Americans expect the economy to improve in the upcoming year. And, this has consumers starting to show optimism in their shopping plans. In line with results from the American Express survey, 51% of respondents in Deloitte’s survey said they hope to spend more or the same on the holidays.

So, what will consumers purchase this season? The National Retail Federation found in their November Consumer Intentions and Actions survey that 58% of adult consumers plan to purchase clothing or clothing accessories as gifts, 55% plan to purchase electronics or computer-related accessories and 42% plan to purchase toys. More important to our industry is that 17% of adult consumers plan to buy home décor or home-related furnishings as gifts this season. And, even when the purchase is not a gift, Deloitte’s survey found consumers are willing to increase spending on home/holiday furnishings.

According to Stacy Janiak, Vice Chairman of Deloitte’s U.S. Retail division, consumers will continue to demonstrate a change in shopping habits, due to the economy. However, they now seem to have an interest in revisiting shopping categories they had previously placed on the back burner. “We have seen key economic indicators ease from their worst levels, helping to put more resources back into Americans’ pockets. As a result, a cautious upturn in sentiment may draw consumers out of their bunkers, turn their focus away from saving and debt reduction, and encourage them to do some holiday shopping for their homes, family and friends.”

What’s helping to fuel enthusiasm among consumers this holiday season? Some say the Internet and social media such as Twitter and Facebook have captured the consumers’ attention and brought excitement back into holiday shopping. According to Shop.org, retailers are creating promotions and incentives to help Americans with their shopping this season. They’re jumping aboard, ramping up their web sites and increasing their use of social media in hopes that it will lead to more sales this season. In other words, they’re letting their online presence shine. In fact, Shop.org’s eHoliday survey revealed 47% of online retailers will be increasing their use of social media this holiday season due to the consumers’ interest in these types of sites.

According to American Express, 79% of consumers intend to use the Internet as a holiday shopping tool this year and 45% will use the Internet to purchase items.

So, let’s be joyfully optimistic going into this holiday season.
